Growth performance in male dairy calves and crossbred calves beef bull x black pied dairy cow 2. morbidity rate and losses as influenced by several factors

Archiv fuer Tierzucht 31(6): 555-562

Studies were made into 29,067 calves to investigate the effect of genotype and age at purchase (transfer from suckling to raising units) on morbidity rate as well as causes and kinds of losses. Among the animals were 8,960 fattening hybrids commercially crossbred from dairy cows and beef bulls; the rest were dairy calves. Marked differences in morbidity rate, losses and causes of losses were found between the two genotypes. The age of calves at purchase, too, had a considerable impact on morbidity rate, losses and causes of losses.
