The development of syntaxonomical classificiation of plant communities on calcareous screes is reviewed. The author compares the level of knowledge achieved in the various European mountains, and proposes relevant syntaxonomical revision for Slovakia. Formation of specific plant species and communities is conditioned by complex influence of the extreme biotope which is designated as a scree phenomenon.
