Home range of heteromys desmarestianus rodentia heteromyidae in a tropical rain forest

Home range of heteromys desmarestianus rodentia heteromyidae in a tropical rain forest

Anales del Instituto de Biologia Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico Serie Zoologia 60(2): 223-240

Home range size of H. desmarestianus was studied in a rainforest located at Los Tuxtlas in Veracruz, Mexico. The reproductive condition of individuals influenced their home ranges and movement patterns. Reproductive males showed greater home ranges and movements than non-reproductive males perhaps to gain more access to mates and food. In contrast, reproductive females.sbd.both, receptive and lactating.sbd.showed lower home ranges and movements and were highly territorial compared to non-reproductive females. Perhaps reproductive females establish territories in microhabitats with high food availability to fulfil their high energic demands imposed by reproduction. Although no evident relationship between fruitfall.sbd.as a crude measurement of food availability to rodents.sbd.and home range size was observed, these variables are close related. Individuals need to aquire enough food to reproduce and thus, food availability ultimately determines home range size and movement patterns. Non-overlapping home ranges between reproductive individuals of the same sex were observed. Males showed greater home ranges than females, and no territorial males were observed during the study. Population density and individual weight affected marginally the home range size of this population.
