Influence of harvest time and fertility level on multiple ratooning of sugarcane saccharum officinarum

A field experiment was conducted during 1981-86 to study the effect of harvest time and fertility level on multiple ratooning of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.). 'Co 7717' and 'Co 1148' were similar in cane yield up to the second ratoon, but 'Co 1148' outyielded 'Co 7717' in the third ratoon. However, being superior in juice quality, 'Co 7717' produced significantly higher sugar yield/ha in the plant crop, first and second ratoons. Stubbles mortality was more in 'Co 1148' than in 'Co 7717'. But with gap-filling, the ratoon yield was higher in 'Co 1148' than in 'Co 7717'. Ratoon harvested either in December or February gave equal yield but the sugar yield/ha was significantly higher in February harvest than in December due to better juice quality. Application of 200 kg N + 100 kg P2O5/ha in the first ratoon crop was beneficial when plant crop received 120 kg N + 50 kg P2O5/ha. In the second and third ratoons, 200 kg N + 100 kg P2O5/ha produced significantly higher cane yield than 120 kg N + 50 kg P2O5/ha.
