Influence of nitrogen phosphorus and growth regulators on seed yield and viability and seedling vigor of egyptian cotton

Randomised complete block factorial experiments were conducted in 1981 and 1982 at the Agricultural Research Center, Giza, Egypt, on the cotton cultivar, 'Gize 75' (Gossypium barbadense L.) to determine the influence of rate of fertilisation with N (72, 144 or 216 kg N/ha) and P (36 or 72 kg P2O5/ha), and foliar application of growth regulators (IAA, IBA or NAA at 10 ppm, foliar-sprayed 70, 85 and 100 days after planting) on seed yield, viability and seedling vigour. Seed yield/plant, seed index (weight of 100 seed in g), seed viability (germination velocity, second germination count, and total germination capacity), and seedling vigour (hypocotyl, radicle or entire seedling length; and seedling fresh and dry weight) increased with increased N rate and with application of IAA, IBA and NAA growth regulators. No significant differences were observed for germination rate index. Increased P fertilisation increased seed yield per plant, germination percentage, germination rate index, length of hypopcotyl, radicle and entire seedling and seedling fresh weight. Seed index and seedling dry weight were not significantly affected.
