Influence of plantlet age of potato on minituberization in vitro solanum tuberosum cultivar bintje

In vitro tubers were obtained from micropropagated plantlets of potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Bintje) in the Tissue Culture Laboratory of ESAL, Lavras-MG [Brazil]. Five nodal segments were cultured on a nutritive liquid medium of Murashige and Skoog (MS). Regenerated plantlets with 2, 3, 4 and 5 weeks of age, were subcultured for tuberization on a MS medium (10 ml) supplemented with 60 g sucrose and 10 mg BAP per liter. The incubation period was 30 days, in dark room, at .+-. 26.degree. C. Higher number, size, and fresh weight of tubers were obtained with plantlets of 4 weeks of age. Such result may be attributed to the high nutrient absorption and translocation capability of plantlets at this age. Size and cuttings of tubers before planting did not affect plant development and production.
