Influence of the growth rate of red and white heifers during breeding on their body weight and milk production in the first lactation

The examinations have been performed in the State Raising Breeding center in Glogowek on 115 primiparous red and white cows. Body weight was measured in cows at the age of 18 months, 10 days before parturition and at 10, 100, 200 and 300 day after calving. On the basis of a daily weight gains from birth to 18 months the animals were divided into three groups: I to 650 g, II from 651 to 750 g, III above 750 g. The daily weight gains in heifers in breeding period influenced significantly body weight of cows at the first lactation. Daily body weight gains does not affect body weight of primiparous cows in individual, periods of lactation and milk productivity. Statistically significant differences were found (P < 0.05) between fat production (kg) of milk in cows of the lowest and the highest daily weight gains in cows to 18 months of lactation. The highest content of fat was found in milk of cows of the IIIrd group.
