Intraspecific variation of the pine moth dendrolimus pini 1. lepidoptera lasiocampidae during an outbreak

, : Intraspecific variation of the pine moth dendrolimus pini 1. lepidoptera lasiocampidae during an outbreak. Entomological Review (English Translation of Entomologicheskoye Obozreniye) 70(8): 83-92

At the period of the outbreak the mortality of first instar larvae was of greater importance than all other factors taken together. A part of a pine moth population having an insignificant mortality of first larvae was studied. Dependence of the egg mass on the survival of the first instar larvae as well as dependence of the egg mass on the .female. pupal mass is shown. Survival of the first instar larvae increases with an increase of egg mass, the maximal egg mass being recorded for .female.s from pupae of an average mass. The experiments demonstrated that specimens with maximal survival leave their offspring in the upper third of pine crowns, where they are not infected by egg parasites and there is an insignificant mortality of first instar larvae. Development periods of the most viable specimens are given. Larval parasites displayed selectivity of host infection.
