Irrigation and fruit thinning of the apple cultivar lobo

An irrigation trial was carried out from 1982 to 1989 at Kise Research Station (60.degree.47'N 10.degree.49'E), Norway with the apple cultivar "Lobo", grown on seedling rootstocks. Chemical thinning was included as a split-plot treatment in the last five years of the trial. Irrigation levels corresponding to the rainfall deficit (pan evaporation minus rainfall) were insufficient to maintain soil moisture from July onwards, and gave no significant yield increase overall. With a 50% higher level of irrigation the yield was increased by 14%, which was mostly due to greater fruit numbers, whereas fruit size was little affected. Irrigation at the lower level reduced the number of Grade 1 apples larger than 60 mm, but no such effect was found at the higher irrigation level. Chemical thinning improved the proportion of Grade 1 apples in three cold years (1985-87), when fruit size was small. In two warm years (1988-89), when fruit size was generally large, there was no such increase in the proportion of Grade 1 apples, but thinning resulted in fewer apples in the 60-70 mm range and more apples larger than 70 mm. Averaged over all five years, thinning gave an increase in Grade 1 yields of 2.5 t/ha/year (about 9%).
