The assimilable N content of a typical red ferrallitic soil was determined by two analytical methods (initial mineral N and organic matter level) and adjustments between dry matter yield and the N extraction of pangola grass (Digitaria decumbens Stent) accumulated for 2 and 3 years were established. Both methods were adjusted significantly (P < 0.001) to the dry matter yield (r2 = 0.84, 0.86, 0.94 and 0.96) and to the N extraction (r2 = 0.93, 0.94, 0.90 and 0.90) of the pasture accumulated for 2 and 3 years, respectively. The annual organic matter mineralization was of 1.9% as average with an overall of 5.4% in the three years. Results indicate the possibility of predicting yield and N extraction of the pasture for 2 or 3 years with the laboratory methods studied in this experiment.
