Leaching losses of nitrogen from slow release nitrogenous fertilisers under waterlogged paddy cultivation

In a greenhouse experiment on 'Ratna' rice (Oryza sativa Linn.) with an acidic alluvial soil of West Bengal [India] it was found that cumulative leaching losses of nitrogen upto 42 days after nitrogen application were more from Ureaform (UF), Crotonylidene diurea (CDU) and Isobutylidene diurea (IBDU) than ordinary urea and Lac-coated urea (LCU). The order being UF > CDU > IBDU > urea > LCU. It was also observed that in case of slow release urea derivatives maximum portion of nitrogen was lost through leaching in the form of urea-N. IBDU and CDU recorded slightly higher grain yield than that of UF and urea treatments. But different nitrogen sources did not show significant differences in case of straw and root yield. More leaching loss of nitrogen adversely affected the nitrogen recovery from slow release urea derivatives. Percentage recovery of applied nitrogen by rice were in the following order: LCU > IBDU > Urea > UF > CDU.
