Lysosomes in denervation atrophy of frog rana cyanophlyctis schn. muscle

The biochemical activities of lysosomal acid hydrolase markers, viz. acid phosphatase and .beta.-glucuronidase were measured 3 months ater denervation in frog gastrocnemius muscle. The specific activity of these enzymes increased in the denervated muscle. Electronmicroscopic studies revealed marked degeneration and dislocation of myofilaments. The presence of secondary lysosomes in the denervated muscle is correlated with the rise in the activities of lysosomal enzymes. Presence of increased rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus in the denervated muscle suggests active protein synthesis and this may be correlated with increased synthesis of lysosomal enzymes. The results suggest that lysosomal enzymes may play a significant role in the denervation atrophy of frog muscle resulting in the disarray and degeneration of myofilaments.
