A number of physiological functions of the cut-off wheat roots at different physiological state have been considered as dependent on the membrane potential. It is established that the membrane potential level correlates with changes in the functional status of cells. It is supposed that the membrane potential is an integral and, to considerable extent, determining index of the physiological state of cells. Taking into account the existence of general regularities of the living system response to the stress factor action it is supposed that the membrane potential can serve a sensitive intracellular parameter of early pathologic changes.
