Mineral supplementation of beef cattle in an andean region of colombia

An experiment was carried out at the Regional Research Center of "El Nus" in San Jose del Nus (Antioquia), Colombia, from May of 1979 to May of 1985. Thirty heifers of local breeding were used in two treatments. The control group (I) received a complete mineral mixture containing both macro and micro elements and contained 6% phosphorus. The second treatment (II) group received a mineral mixture with only calcium, phosphorus (6%), copper and zinc. The animals grazed the forage Hyparrhenia rufa with a 56-day rotation period. Forage analysis during the trial revealed low concentrations of phosphorus, sulfur, copper and zinc, and relatively high values of potassium, iron and magnesium. Blood serum and liver biopsy sample concentrations were similar between treatments but within normal ranges. The mean birth weight and weaning weights were similar between treatments. Reproductive parameters were not different (P > .05) between treatments. The claving intervals of the group II consistently were shorter that the group I (541 and 561 days, respectively) but without statistical difference. The overall mean calving percentage was 76% for treatment I and 80% for the special mineral mixture treatment. The real benefit for using a mineral mixture composed only of known deficient elements was the 42% cost savings when compared with the complete mineral mixture. This suggests that in tropical regions where mineral mixtures are expensive a good procedures is to provide more economical, regionally formulated mineral mixtures.
