Modern approach to the classification system of cyanophytes 4. nostocales

The fourth part of our classification principles, proposed for the account of the cyanophytes (cyanobacteria) for the prepared monographs "Susswasserflora von Mitteleuropa", "Da Phytoplankton des Susswassers", and "Index of Cyanophytes" is hereby presented (1st part: Anagnostidis and Komarek and Anagnostidis 1986, 3rd part: Anagnostidis and Komarek 1988). Nostocalean genera (order Nostocales) treated in this study are diversified in such a degree that the taxonomy based on the morphological features is not in a substantial contradiction with the recently applied characters derived from modern experimental studies. Therefore, the changes in their system are not so drastic as in more simple groups. Several stable features were consequently applied (structure of filaments, type of the akinete formation, life cycles, etc). The new genus TRICHORMUS [type species T. variabilis (Kutz, 1886) comb. nov. (Anabaena variabilis)] was separated from Anabaena in respect of the special type type of akinete formation. The intergeneric characters were discussed. -The system of Nostocales contains after revision 32 genera, classified into four families: 1. Scytonemataceae, 2. Microhaetaceae (subfamilies: Tolypotrichoideae, Microchaetoideae), 3. Rivulariaceae, 4. Nostocaceae (subfamilies: Anabaenoideae, Nostocoideae).
