Morphological characters to identify adult lucilia sericata meigen 1826 and lucilia cuprina wiedemann 1830 diptera calliphoridae

Morphological characters to identify adult lucilia sericata meigen 1826 and lucilia cuprina wiedemann 1830 diptera calliphoridae

New Zealand Journal of Zoology 18(4): 413-420

Since its arrival in New Zealand before 1988, the Australian sheep blowfly, Lucilia cuprina, has spread throughout the North Island and into the northern part of the South Island. This species can initiate fly-strike in sheep and goats and has already become a serious pest in New Zealand. Its distribution and behaviour are currently being studied jointly by DSIR and MAF research groups. Adults of L. cuprina look very similar to those of the European green blowfly, L. sericata, which also causes fly-strike and is widely distributed in New Zealand. The present study was undertaken in order to find reliable and easily seen morphological characters that could be used by non-specialists wanting to identify Lucilia specimens from baited traps and fly-struck animals in New Zealand. Morphological features were compared and assessed in 22 males and 33 females of L. cuprina and 82 males and 118 females of L. sericata from New Zealand. Nearly all of the specimens could be identified by the number of paravertical setulae present on the back of the head. New diagnostic characters were found on the head and scutellum of both sexes and in the external genitalia of males. Line drawings and scanning electron micrographs are included in the paper.
