Morphometric analyses of the cyprinid fish genus Puntioplites in Peninsular Malaysia

Morphometric analyses of the cyprinid fish genus Puntioplites in Peninsular Malaysia

Malayan Nature Journal 42(1): 21-28

Data on morphometric chracteristics and distribution of two species of the cyprinid fish genus Puntioplites found in Peninsular Malaysia are presented. Features distinguishing the species are: (1) denticulation on posterior part of the longest anal spine, (2) depth of caudal peduncle; (3) body depth; and (4) coloration. Denticulation on the posterior part of the longest anal spine is a single major feature that distinguishes the two species. It is well developed in P. proctozysron, but absent in P. bulu. Depths of caudal peduncle and body for P. proctozysron are 0.15-0.16 and 0.49-0.54, respectively. These values are statistically smaller for P. bulu. (P > 0.01). Several oblique blackish bands are found on the body of P. bulu which are longer than 50 mm. The body of P. proctozysron is silvery in colour for all sizes. Puntioplites proctozysron is confined to Sungai Tembeling and its vicinity. Puntioplites bulu, on the other hand, is distributed over a wide range of freshwater habitats in Peninsular Malaysia.
