Myxosporidian parasite in the isopod mesidotea entomon

Myxosporidian parasite in the isopod mesidotea entomon

Diseases of Aquatic Organisms 5(2): 107-110

The isopod Mesidotea entomon (Linnaeus), infected by a myxosporidian parasite tentatively identified as Myxidium Butschli, was examined microscopically for histopathological effects and host response. Reproductive organs, digestive system, salivary glands, all tissues except those of the integument, and body cavities were invaded: tissues were displaced and compacted but there was little necrosis. The host response consisted of hemocytic infiltration, phagocytosis, and encapsulation. This is the first report of a myxosporidian parasite occurring in this species.
