N propylamine pretreatment of buffered solvent pulp to enhance enzymatic hydrolysis

The enzymatic hydrolysis of n-propylamine swollen buffered solvent pulp was studied in batch reactors. The rate of hydrolysis and the conversion of n-propylamine swollen and water extracted pulp was found to be approximately 60% higher than nonswollen pulp. Residual n-propylamine in the swollen pulp was found to inhibit strongly the enzymatic hydrolysis of the pulp. Water extraction was found to remove completely the residual amine. X-ray diffraction was used to characterize n-propylamine swollen buffered solvent pulp. Compared to nonswollen pulp, the swollen pulp was found to have reduced crystallinity and the remaining crystals were transformed from Cellulose I to Cellulose III.
