Needle discolourations of european larch larix decidua mill. in the transition zone between erz mountains and saxon switzerland occurrence and susceptibility factors

Archiv fuer Phytopathologie und Pflanzenschutz 27(4): 313-319

In a large test area, yellowing of short-shoot needles was found in about 9% of all trees of European larch (Larix decidua Mill.). It seems to be due to a whole complex of factors including extensive air pollution, soil factors affecting the nutrition of trees, and eluviation from needles and soil. Each strressor alone was too weak to bring about the discolouration of needles. Further research work on this problem is urgently required along with the more careful monitoring of larch stands for animal pests and fungi. The results of these investigations alone do not justify restrictions when cultivating larch trees in the region under review. Such approach is recommended, however, for basic ecological reasons.
