New species and populations of cave nemacheilines in south and south east asia osteichthyes balitoridae

New species and populations of cave nemacheilines in south and south east asia osteichthyes balitoridae

Memoires de Biospeologie 17: 49-56

Two new species of cave fishes of the family Balitoridae, subfamily Nemacheilinae, are described. Schistura jarutanini from Tham Ba Dan, Thailand, has reduced to vestigial eyes and still retains some colouration. Sundoreonectes tiomanenesis from a cave on Pulau Tioman, Malaysia, is the first member of its family reported from this island; it has slightly reduced eyes and no colour pattern. The new generic name Sundoreonectes is made available for it and Nemacheilus obesus Vaillant, 1902. A new population of the blind N. troglocataractus from Thailand and a cave population of the otherwise epigean Indoreonectes evezardi from India are reported.
