This report is to investigate the old patients attending the neuropsychiatric out-patient clinic of Yokohama City University Hospital and to evaluate the demented persons comparing with other various diseases. The total number of patients over 65 years of age was 496, 315 females and 181 males. The patients under 75 years old were about 70% of the whole. To concern clinical diagnosis, the number of cases of senile depressive state was 108, manic-depressive psychosis 74, senile neurosis 68, vascular dementia 59, cerebral arteriosclerosis 39. Parkinson's disease 20, senile psychosis 20, senile dementia of Alzheimer type 19, and epilepsy, schizophrenia, unclassified group of dementia, psychological reaction, presenile dementia in order and the others including various neurological diseases. The patients with dementia were 92 of the whole in number. The patients with hypertension as a complication were 107, heart disease 34, orthopedical disease 34 and diabetes mellitus 19 cases. Regarding medications, minor tranquilizers, hypnotics and antidepressants were largely used and, next, anti-Parkinsonian drugs, drugs for improvement of cerebral blood flow and activator of cerebral metabolism and major tranquilizers were taken in order. On the clinical course, the group with improvement was 139 in number, the fixed group 275, the group with aggravation 45. The patients taking a turn for the worse were mostly in the demented. Conclusively, in geriatrical treatment of psychiatry, it is important that the aged persons are easily afflicted with diseases of senile depressive state and dementia, and we should fully understand characteristics of the diseases.
