Orientation studies into prophylaxis to yersinia enterocolitica infection of swine

A pigsty-specific Yersinia (Y.) enterocolitica adsorbate vaccine (serovariety 03) was used on a breeding pig stock with wide proliferation of several Y. enterocolitica serovars. The effectiveness of such stock immunisation was confirmed by bacteriological and serological tests and by an analysis of fertility results. Vaccine application was followed by a 14 percent rise of pregnancy rate, and 1.5 piglets were additionally raised from each productive sow. These observations as well as results obtained from a contact experiment (in which gilts were moved to join Y. enterocolitica-infected animals and subsequently showed fertility rates very much below those recorded from control animals) gave rise to a discussion of a causative relationship between Y. enterocolitica infection and fertility.
