Ovarian reaction and embryo quality in donor gilts used for embryo transfer following superovulation stimulated by 1500 iu pmsg

Superovulation was induced by means of 1,500 IU of PMSG to 222 donor gilts which responded by 33.4 .+-. 13.4 ovulations. Recovered were 26.8 .+-. 13.8 embryos, which brought the recovery rate to 79.6 .+-. 23.4 percent. The rate of transfer-suitable embryos amounted to 72.7 .+-. 23.8 percent. Ovulation and embryo figures in prepuperal gilts were higher with significance than those recorded from cyclic gilts, the values being 40.1 .+-. 12.8 or 32.5 .+-. 13.6 as compared to 29.4 .+-. 12.1 or 23.4 .+-. 12.8. The oestrus behaviour had in cyclic gilts a positive impact on ovarian reaction and embryo yield. Prepuberal gilts responded by high ovulation rates and embryo yields, no matter what their oestrus behaviours had been. An analysis of 5,959 oocytes, recovered between the first and seventh days of cycle, enabled preparation of time patterns and schedules for collection of defined oocyte development stages for embryo transfer as well as for research in genetic and cytological engineering and embryology.
