Ovipositional and feeding preference of beet armyworm spodoptera exigua huebner lepidoptera noctuidae

Ovipositional preference of beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua, adult and feeding preference of its larva were observed on 13 crops in the laboratory. Ovipositional preference was high in chinese cabbage, spinach and tobacco and was low in kidney bean, water melon, tomato, melon, and corn. Over 93% of the egg batches was laid on the underside of leaves and 3.3% and 3.6% of the egg masses was deposited on upperside of leaves and stems, respectively. Newly hatched larvae prefered cucumber, spinach and chinese cabbage and 3 .apprx. 4th instar larvae prefered water melon, chinese cabbage and corn. The area of leaf consumed by 3 .apprx. 4th instar larvae during 24 hours was 252mm2 in corn, 169mm2 in chinese cabbage and 164mm2 in spinach, and no consumption was observed in cucumber, melon and tobacco.
