Performance of holstein x zebu crossbred cows under different milking and suckling management systems

The effects of either the presence or absence of the calf during milking and suckling on the productive performance of 40 Holstein .times. Zebu crossbred cows have been studied. The milk production means and standard errors were: Treatment A - milking with the presence of the calf that allowed to suckle: 2.605.+-.606 kg; Treatment B - milking with the presence of the calf that was not allowed to Suckle: 2.436.+-.557 kg; Treatment C - milking in the absence of the calf: 1.506.+-.569 kg; Treatment D - milking without the presence of the calf that was allowed to suckle after completion of milking: 1.137.+-.841 kg. The corresponding values for milk fat production were: 101.+-.40 kg; 100.+-.22 kg; 63.+-.24 kg; 39.+-.38kg, whereas the lactation length records were: 287.+-.30 days; 283.+-.42 days; 222.+-.71 days; 167.+-.88 days. Analyses of variance showed significant effect of the presence of the calf during milking on three parameters studied. Interaction effect studied by comparing suckling and no suckling with and without the calf during the milking showed that in the absence of the calf to the lactation length was longer when the calf was not allowed to Suckle.
