Results obtained in a two-year investigation on the transmission rate of D. graminea from infected seeds to tillers in barley, are reported. In the first year (1984/85) weather conditions, especially low temperatures after sowing, were favourable for the penetration of the fungus in the embryo during seed germination. The transmission rate of the infection from seeds to tillers attained 60,9%. In the second year, due to higher temperatures after sowing, lower percentages of transmission were recorded (35,5%). These results indicate that sowing winter barley in cold periods (temperatures less than C) may cause severe yield losses when seeds infected by D. graminea are used.
