Production capabilities and nitrogenous matter contents in grain of soviet and european winter wheat assortments

Over the years 1983 - 1985, 36 cultivars of winter wheat were evaluated at the Piestany Plant Production Research Institute, in cooperation with the VIR Leningrad Institute. The cultivars studied were prevailingly of Soviet provenience, supplemented by certain Central - and West European as well as some Czechoslovak cultivars. The stand height, grain yield, and other characteristics were most affected by the year, followed by the cultivar used, and year .times. cultivar interaction. The results have shown that from the 36 cultivars studied, lowest stem heights were found at the 'Avalon', and 'Bounty' cultivars from the United Kingdom, as well as the 'Belckaja' /SU/, 'Baranjka' /YU/, and the 'Donskaja polukarlikovaja' /SU/ cultivars. High thousand-kernel-weight were found at the 'Severodonskaja, 'Ersovskaja 8', 'Urozajnaja', 'Sojuz 50', and 'Taskentskaja 2' Soviet cultivars. The 'Granada cultivar /D/ was the highest yielding cultivar followed by the Czechoslovak 'Vala' and 'Odra', and the Soviet Kijevskaja 73' and 'Nachodka' cultivars. Highest nitrogenous matter contents were found in the following Soviet cultivars: 'Bogornaja 56', 'Mironovskaja nizkoroslaja', 'Gorki 76', 'Falestskaja 2' and 'Ersovskaja 8'. Cultivars yielding the glassiest grain were the Soviet, 'Kijevskaja 73', 'Donskaja polukarlikovaja' 'Mironovskaja 808', 'Falestskaja 2' and the Czechoslovak 'Odra' cultivars. Negative correlation coefficients were found between grain yields and contents of nitrogenous matter, grain yields and glassiness whereas positive correlation coefficient between nitrogenous matter contents and grain glassiness could be determined.
