Pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) protected rats from experimental liver injury induced by the hepatotoxins carbon tetrachloride, D-galactosamine, thioacetamide, and allyl formate. The effect was observed after an intraperitoneal injection of no less than 5-mg/kg body weight. PQQ was given either before or within five to six hours following administration of the hepatotoxin. Oral administration of PQQ was not effective, suggesting poor absorption of PQQ from the gastrointestinal tract.
