Quantitative analysis of maximal width face growth in staged human fetuses during the second trimester of pregnancy

Quantitative analysis of maximal width face growth in staged human fetuses during the second trimester of pregnancy

ISSN/ISBN: 0015-5454

The study of relative growth of maximum width of face was made in 50 Brazilian human fetuses of both sexes (29 males; 21 females) staged according to streeter1 and modified by Mandarin-de-Lacerda and Passos2, taking the foot length as parameter. The allometric method was used for correlation of the face width with the employed fetal parameters of growth: gestational age (in weeks post-conception; crown-rump length in milimeters; fetal weight in grams) using the equation Log Y = K Log X + Log b where K is the allometric coefficient that evaluates this growth. The results suggest that facial width is isometric for fetal age; and negative allometric for crown-rump length and fetal weight.
