Reactions of an experimental outdoor pond to lindane application

An experimental outdoor pond was examined for its reaction to the insecticide lindane. The pond was divided into three identical subunits. One was the internal control; to the others two different concentrations of lindane (0,2 and 0,5 mg litre-1) were applied and maintained over eight weeks. Biotic and abiotic parameters of the three compartments were measured in the year of application and in the following year. - At the end of the first year, no further lindane residues could be detected in the contaminated systems. The macrophytes showed no reaction to the insecticide. In the year of the application, lindane caused an alteration of the algae composition. The density of the total phytoplankton increased in the compartments with the pesticide. The copepods were damaged most by the contamination with lindane. Several cladoceran species were affected, too. In the post application year the above-mentioned effects were observed again in compartment 2 that had been treated with 0.5 mg lindane litre-1. In addition, the dissolved oxygen content was reduced in this system. In the second year, ostracods were sparse in the contaminated compartments.
