Realized heritabilities and short term selection response to body weight selection in the indigenous pearl guinea fowl in nigeria

Realized heritabilities and short term selection response to body weight selection in the indigenous pearl guinea fowl in nigeria

Archiv fuer Gefluegelkunde 54(6): 213-217

Data were collected over three generations on the indigenous Pearl guinea fowl to determine realized heritabilities, selection response and correlation between body weight, feed conversion and mortality. The mean response to two generations of selection were 24.74 .+-. 3.33 g, 21.36 .+-. 1.85 g and 22.86 .+-. 0.78 g for the male, female and sexes combined respectively. The combined responses were 76 and 82% of the predicted responses in the first and second generations of selection, respectively. The realized heritability estimates at 18 weeks of age were lower than those estimated from the sire, dam and combined components of variance from the hierarchial model. The realized heritability estimates of body weight at 18 weeks of age 0.29 (h2S), 0.32 (h2D) and 0.32 (h2D + S). Cross-breeding of the selected Pearl guinea fowl with a fast growing exotic stock is proposed in order to enhance the usefulness of the local Pearl guinea fowl as a table bird.
