The diffuse reflectance spectra of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) tuber discs showed the presence of intensive bands due to carotenoid absorption. The changes in the reflectance spectra caused by mechanical wounding, infection with Ph. infestans as well as treatment with arachidonic acid which exhibits elicitor activity, resulting in polyphenol oxidase-mediated production of melanin-like pigments were studied. The Kubelka-Munk remission of reflectance as a function of arachidonic acid concentration applied is presented. The application of reflectance spectroscopy for the evaluation of immune response in potato tuber tissues is discussed.
