Relations between milk yield udder health and milk and blood protein polymorphisms in dairy cows

It was the aim of this investigation to contribute to the possible antagonism between milk yield and health of the mammary gland expressed by udder codes depending upon cell counts. For this purpose it was investigated, if relations to protein polymorphisms in milk and blood can be demonstrated. 614 milk samples and 309 samples of blood were collected from heifers from the hessian breeding area. Milk samples were drawn in 4-weeks interval, right post partum until the end of lactation and determinations of cell counts performed. The results can be summarised as follows: - In heifers showing cell counts below 300,000/ml during complete lactation no relation to milk yield could be found. - Correlations according to Spearman and regression coefficients showed a tendency that when health of the udder is decreasing milk yield will be lowered. - There was no relation between the udder code during first 3 months of lactation and total milk production. - Heifers carrying the combination of transferrin D1D2/post-transferrin FS/group specific component BB/hemoglobin AA/carboanhydrase SS or transferrin D2E/post-transferrin FS/group specific component BB/hemoglobin AA/carboanhydrase SS showed higher milk production when compared to non carrier animals but had a higher incidence of secretion disturbance. - Heifers carrying the .beta.-lactoglobulin variant AA showed significant lower milk yield than animals carrying types BB or AB. - Heifers carrying the combination .beta.-lactoglobulin AA/.alpha.s1-casein BB showed a significant lower milk yield compared to non carriers. Animals with the combination .vkappa.-casein AB/.beta.-casein A1A2 had a high significant higher milk production when compared to non carriers. - Heifers with the combination .beta.-lactoglobulin BB/.alpha.s1-casein BB/.vkappa.-casein AB/.beta.-casein A1A2 showed high significant higher milk yield when compared to non carriers. Animals of .beta.-lactoglobulin AB/.alpha.s1-casein BB/.kappa.-casein AB/.beta.-casein A1A2 were found to be significantly higher in milk production.
