Relationship between cation exchange capacity of root and plant growth yield and nutrient uptake by rice oryza sativa

Six varieties ('Himdhan', 'HPU 741', 'China 988', 'HPU 71', 'Norin 18' and 'HPU 734;) of rice (Oryza sativa Linn.) were grown in pots to find out the cation-exchange capacity (CEC) of roots and its relationship with growth parameters, yield and nutrient uptake at different physiological growth stages. The CEC of roots was maximum (17.25 meq/100 g) at tillering stage, which decreased with an increase in the age of the plant. Significant differences were observed in the CEC of roots of different varieties, but the differences became almost narrow in later stages, and ultimately the CEC of all the varieties became similar with the approach of crop maturity. The CEC was positively correlated with plant height and tiller numbers at early stages, and with number of spikelets and 100-grain weight at maturity. The shoot and root weights at tillering and flowering stages and the grain and straw at maturity were positively correlated with CEC. The uptake of P, K, Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn by shoot and root at tillering and flowering stages and by straw and grain at maturity also had significant and positive correlation with CEC, with some variation within varieties. However, the uptake of these nutrients by roots at maturity was not related with CEC in any variety.
