Release pattern of nitrate nitrogen from nitrogenous fertilizers under field condition in meghalaya india and its effect on yield of potato solanum tuberosum

A field experiment was conducted with 'Kufri Jyoti' potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) during 1987-88 to study the release pattern of nitrate-nitrogen from nitrogenous fertilizers in acidic soil (pH 5.2) of Meghalaya. Higher amount of NO3-N in the soil was produced by application of ammonium sulphate, urea alone or in combination with magnesium carbonate or calcium carbonate than of slow-release N sources, viz gypsum-coated urea and rock phosphate-coated urea, up to 60 days after planting of potato. At later stages of plant growth, ammonium sulphate, gypsum-coated urea and rock phosphate-coated urea maintained higher NO3-N in the soil (23.4, 20.9 and 20.8 ppm respectively) compared with the control (No) (8.3), urea alone (16.1) or combined with magnesium carbonate (16.9) and calcium carbonate (15.9). Almost constant amount of NO3-N was found up to 60 days after planting, which was reduced significantly at 75 and 90 days. The NO3-N content decreased with depth of soil from an average value of 34.3 ppm in 0-20 cm to 12.6 ppm in 60-80 cm depth. Tuber yield increased significantly with the application of ammonium sulphate, gypsum-coated urea and rock phosphate-coated urea compared with other N sources. The tuber yield was the highest with ammonium sulphate (22.4 tonnes/ha) and lowest with urea (19.9 tonnes/ha).
