Resistance in triticale to russian wheat aphid and greenbug

Resistance in triticale to russian wheat aphid and greenbug

Southwestern Entomologist 14(2): 167-178

Twenty-one new lines of triticale (X Triticosecale Wittmack) from Centro Internacional de Mejoramiento de Maiz y Trigo (CIMMYT) in Mexico were screened for sources of resistance to Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko) and greenbug, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), biotypes C and E. An initial rapid screening test for indications of tolerance and preference was conducted, and the most promising varieties were subjected to a second, more detailed antibiosis test. In both tests, 'Eronga 83', 'Katze"S"' and 'WOMBAT"S"' showed resistance to all three aphids. 'DINGO"S"' showed resistance to both greenbug biotypes, but not to Russian wheat aphid; and 'HARE 212' exhibited a high degree of resistance to Russian wheat aphid but not to greenbugs. These five lines may be of potential use in wheat breeding programs as sources of resistance to greenbug and Russian wheat aphid.
