In order to analyze the varietal differences in the resistance to the melon aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover in melon, the increase in the number of aphids on 12 melon cultivars was examined by controlled infestation tests in a vinyl-house and the effect of melon cultivars on the development, survival and reproduction of aphids was studied by rearing experiments. 1. In the vinyl-house the increase in the number of aphids varied among the melon cultivars examined. 2. The increase in the number of aphids per plant fitted well to the exponential growth equation (Nt = N0ert) for most of the cultivars. The intrinsic rate of increase (r) was lowest on 'PMAR No.5' followed by 'Charentais T', and two oriental melons 'Mi tang ting' and 'Chung bo aegi'. The rate was high on all the other cultivars examined including 'Honey Dew' and 'Akikei No.1'. 3. In the rearing tests, the prereproductive period on 'PMAR No.5' postreproductive period and total longevity on 'PMAR No.5', were shorter than those on 'Honey Dew' and 'Akikei No.1'. The fecundity of aphids on 'PMAR No.5' was 1/2 of that on 'Honey Dew' and 'Akikei No.1' respectively. These results suggest that the low increase rate in the vinyl-house on 'PMAR No.5' was due mainly to antibiosis. 4. In the same test there were no differences in the developmental time and fecundity among 'Charentais T', 'Honey Dew' and 'Akikei No.1'. These results suggest that the low increase rate on 'Charentais T' in the vinyl-house was not due to antibiosis but to the escape of aphids from these plants. 5. Thus 'PMAR No.5' appeared to have an apparent resistance to A. gossypii and to be a promising source of resistant germplasm.
