Resistance of small ruminant nematodes to benzimidazole derivative compounds in limousin france

A survey was carried out in the Limousin area in France in twenty one sheep or goat flocks with parasitic gastro-enteritic problems. The use and efficacy of anthelmintics were investigated. Resistance to anthelmintic was estimated by in vivo test (coproscopical examinations before and after treatment with thiabendazole) and in vitro test (egg hatch test with thiabendazole, oxibendazole or albendazole). Resistance to several benzimidazole derivative compounds was found in about 50 per cent of the flocks. Four genus are concerned: Haemonchus, Trichostrongylus, Teladorsagia, Cooperia, the two laters being associated with the highest resistance factors. The number of treatments, one to five per year, was not in relation with the degree of resistance. The management procedures might be a selective factor: the most resistant parasites were found in range lambing flocks in comparison with semi-confinement flocks.
