Response of gobhi sarson brassica napus ssp oleifera var annua to irrigation and fertilizer nitrogen in punjab india

A field experiment was conducted during the winter seasons of 1986-87 and 1987-88 to study the response of 'Ludhiana 1; gobhi sarson (Brassica napus L. subsp oleifera DC, var annua L.) to irrigation and N. Three levels of irrigation (1, 2 and 3) and 4 levels of N (0, 50, 100, 150 kg/ha) were tried. The crop responded to both N and irrigation and the interaction between the 2 was significant. N @ 150 kg/ha gave the highest seed yield (2 111 kg/ha) with 3 post-sowing irrigations; first at 28 days and the subsequent 2 at cumulative pan evaporation (minus rainfall during the irrigation cycle) of 80 mm by the end of December and beginning of January, and in the second fortnight of February. The crop responded significantly up to 150 kg N/ha. The increase in seed yield at 150 kg N/ha was significantly better than at other N levels. The seed-yield response with the last increment of 50 kg N/ha (100-150 kg) was respectively 281 and 260 kg/ha during the 2 years. This equalled a cost: benefit ratio of 1 : 5-6, representing 5-6 times the benefit for the every rupee spent on fertilizer. Within limits the 2 growth factors (irrigation and N) tended to substitute each other. Therefore isoquants of seed yield with different levels of irrigation and N, ie the combination of different levels of N and amount of water use required to produce the target seed yield of 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 tonnes/ha, were computed.
