Response of winter maize zea mays to seeding date seed furrow mulching and fertilization with nitrogen phosphorus and potassium

A field experiment was conducted at Dholi during 1985-87 to find out the effect of seeding date, seed-furrow mulching and NPK fertilization on the growth, yield and nutrient uptake of winter maize (Zea mays L.). The crop sown on 1 November gave the highest grain yield (7.09 tonnes/ha) whereas that sown on 15 December gave the lowest grain yield (3.83 tonnes/ha). Seed-furrow mulching also increased the grain yield by 5.23% compared with no seed-furrow mulching. NPK at 150% of recommended dose gave maximum grain yield (6.17 tonnes/ha), followed by 100% (5.12 tonnes/ha) and 50% of NPK (3.8 tonnes/ha). The leaf-area index, cob length, number and weight of grains and 1000-grain weight were higher in the crop sown on 1 November than on other dates. Similarly, mulching favourably influenced these growth and yield attributes than no mulching and among NPK levels; the values were maximum at 150% NPK than at 50 or 100% levels. None of the interaction effects except data of sowing .times. levels of fertilization was significant. NPK uptake also affected similar to that of growth characters under different treatments.
