Salmonella cholerae suis vaccinal strain 237 sm tested for pathogenicity and immunogenicity in rabbits

The swine Salmonella vaccine, prepared from strain Sm 237, was tested for potency through immunization and challenge of laboratory animals. Of the test animals, rabbits proved good markers as to the pathogenicity attenuation of the vaccinal strain Sm 237; doses of 5 .times. 109 live organisms were used in the rabbit, with no local or systemic reactions. One Salmonella cholerae suis strain was used for the challenge and tested for pathogenicity by i.v. and s.c. inoculations into both piglets and rabbits subsequently showing acute, septicaemic disease signs; 50% of the animals died following inoculation of 108 and 5 .times. 102,4 live organisms into 12-14 kg piglets and 2-2.5 kg rabbits respectively. Trials in rabbits immunized with different germ levels of the vaccinal strain established a protective dose 50 for animals immunized with 5 .times. 108 organisms as against the challenge done with 100,000 LD50 of the pathogenic strain. The results obtained proved constant throughout the four assays carried out. This method can be proposed for the routine control of pathogenicity and antigenicity attenuation of Salmonella cholera suis, Sm 237 vaccinal strain.
