Screening cluster bean cyamopsis tetragonoloba l. taub. germplasm for resistance to root knot nematode meloidogyne incognita kofoid and white chitwood and studies on host nematode relationship

Out of 35 germplasm collection of clusterbean C. tetragonoloba screened for resistance against root-knot nematode M. incognita in greenhouse conditions, none was found to be immune, however, only three viz., ILO 1539-1, IL 79-1028-1, ILO 77-4-1 were found to be resistant, whereas seven were moderately resistant and remaining were susceptible. Pathogenicity tests showed a steady decrease in plant growth characters, number of nodules and total nitrogen content of the leaf at 10, 100, 1000 and 10,000 inoculum levels respectively. Significant reduction in plant growth, number of nodules and total nitrogen content of the leaf were obtained at 1000 and 10,000 larvae/pot levels. Histopathological studies of infected roots of clusterbean again ensured its high susceptibility towards this nematode species in which well developed adult females associated with many giant cells in the disrupted vascular regions were observed.
