Screening for primary open angle glaucoma by the systematic examination of the optic disc in black africans

Screening for primary open angle glaucoma by the systematic examination of the optic disc in black africans

Afrique Medicale 28(273): 206-208

Primary open-angle glaucoma is a major case of poor sight and cecitis in Africa due to its late diagnosis linked to the lack of specialized centers and public ignorance. The use of ophthalmoscopic examination of the optic disc was tested as a screening method in 200 patients hospitalized for various other conditions at the teaching hospital of Dakar, Senegal, and in 142 volunteers at the Saint-Louis Hospital of northern Senegal. Of the 200 patients examined, 31 had suspect optic discs, and, out of these, 4 cases of glaucoma were detected. Out of the 142 volunteers, 26 suspect optic discs revealing 8 cases of glaucoma were detected.
