Selection for body weight at 42 days in laboratory mice with and without litter size standardization direct response and correlated effects on litter size

Selection for body weight at 42 days in laboratory mice with and without litter size standardization direct response and correlated effects on litter size

Archiv fuer Tierzucht 35(3): 305-319

In two experiments full-sib selection for increased body weight at 42 days (BW 42) was practiced for 8 or 9 generations in two lines of an outbred population. In one line, all litters were standardized to eight mice at birth (DU-6s) and in the other not (DU-6ns). Direct responses and correlated effects were measured as deviations from the corresponding control lines (DU-Ks, DU-Kns). Response to selection in BW 42 2.male. (BW of two test males per litter) in line DU-6s and DU-6ns averaged 2.13 g (1.5; 2.8 = interval of confidence) and 1.45 g (0.4; 2.5) or if adjusted for LS 0 depression (in line DU-6ns) 1.09 g (0.5; 1.7) per generation. The realized heritabilities were 0.43.+-.0.1 (DU-6s) and 0.15.+-.0.06 (DU-6ns). Whereas the litter size (number of live born pups) in line DU-6s increased (b = 0.21 (0.07; 0.34)) in line DU-6ns a significant decrease was stated (b = -0.41 (-0.63; -0.19)). The effects of litter size standardization on direct response and correlated effects were discussed with assessing the comparability of the two experiments.
