Single stage cold cleaning of a milking machine with an acidified iodophor based detergent

A one step cold cleaning system which uses a detergent-acid-iodophor solution was compared with the traditional (hot) 'triple' system. The one step system was a post milking rinse followed by the cleaning solution which was allowed to drain with no post cleaning or pre-milking rinses. A doubled up herring bone machine with recirculation via a third line was set up so that each cleaning system could be used simultaneously to wash sides separately. Cleaning performance was tested by bacteriological counts on the milk from each side during the trial, and by inspection following the 5 week experiment period. The mean total counts and thermoduric counts during the trial for the cold and hot cleaning were 11,000 and 74,000 colony forming units (CFU)/mL and 1,000 and 1,400 CFU/mL, respectively. Coliforms were detected on 10 and 2 occasions out of 17 in the cold and hot treatments, respectively. No milkstone built up in the machine but a small amount of white material accumulated on the surface of the rubber milk droppers at the junction of the droppers with the stainless steel tube. During recirculation with the iodophor based detergent excessive frothing occurred in the receival vessel. The detergent-acid-iodophor system is not suitable for machines with recirculation cleaning systems but is probably suitable for flush through cleaning systems.
