Sire evaluation methods in estimating the breeding values of sires for age at first calving in sahiwal x holstein friesian crossbreds

Efficiency of various sire evaluation procedures in estimating the breeding values of sires for age at first calving was investigated. The data from 1563 and 688 crossbred female progeny born to 29 Holstein-Friesian and 8 Sahiwal sires respectively and maintained at three military dairy farms in Southern India formed the basis for the study. Contemporary comparions, index corrected for body weight at first calving, simplified regression least squares and best linear unbiased prediction methods were found to be equally efficient. Generalised least squares appeared to be least efficient. Perusal of various analytical criteria indicated that almost all the methods were equally efficient in evaluating HF and Sahiwal sires under the conditions specific to the present data. However, I1, I2, I5 and I6 could be preferred over I3 and I4 for improving age at first calving through sire selection.
