Solubility of gallstones in methyl tert butyl ether mtbe in vitro

Solubility of gallstones in methyl tert butyl ether mtbe in vitro

Ceskoslovenska Gastroenterologie a Vyziva 43(4): 238-243

The authors investigated in vitro the solubility of 40 gallstones, selected at random, in MTBE in relation to their size and chemical composition. In the course of 130 mins. 80% of the stones dissolved completely or partly and lost thus at least 90% of their original weight. The solubility depended on the size of the stones and their cholesterol content. Stones smaller than 1 cm containing more than 50% cholesterol were more soluble. The authors found a relationship which could be expressed mathematically, i.e. a correlation between rate of gallstone dissolution and their size and cholesterol content.
