The utilization of the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis to control the two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae in plastic houses in Egypt showed apparent success in spring 1987. Therefore, it was used in two glasshouses for growing cucumbers (cv. 'Beit Alpha K-2744') in 1988 spring season. Nearly equal numbers of P. persimilis were released in each glasshouse but with different release rates; i.e., in the first glasshouse, predatory mites were released only on early infested plants at the rate of 10 individuals/plant. After 3 weeks, release was repeated at the same rate. Meanwhile in the second glasshouse predators were released onto alternative plants at the rate of 15 individuals/plant. Population density of T. urticae in the first glasshouse reached a ceiling of 39-48 individuals/inch2, therefore, integration with acaricides was necessary. In the second glasshouse it reached maximum density of 35 individuals/inch2 and then declined gradually to 22.1 without acaricidal application. Generally, the predacious mite P. persimilis was ineffective regarding the suppression of T. urticae infestation in relation to the economic threshold of damage. Factors that must have influenced the reduction of effectiveness of P. persimilis are the low level of relative humidity which prevailed in glasshouses (22-68%) beside the fluctuation of temperature between 8-43.degree. C, some problems concerned with storage and mass production of P. persimilis and developmental stage of the grown cucumber on which predacious mites were released.
