Some metabolic changes in susceptible and resistant tobacco varieties caused by infection with the tobacco mosaic virus

The reproduction of the tobacco mosaic virus and the activities of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and ribonuclease were studied in three susceptible and three resistant varieties of tobacco (exhibiting a hypersensitive reaction). The susceptible varieties were found to have an increased activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (key regulatory enzyme of the oxidative pentose cycle) throughout the period under study, whereas in the resistant varieties the activity of this enzyme did not differ from that of the healthy control plants. In the susceptible variety 'Samsun' the activity of ribonuclease grew during the period of study whereas in the resistant variety 'Xanthi-nc.' it declined. These differences are statistically highly significant: towards the end of the period of investigation they exceeded 25%.
